Policy Statement
The policy of the Harry
Potter Word Wizard is to enable the reader to enunciate
some of the more difficult words in the Harry Potter
books. These pronunciations are from Scholastic Inc.,
the Harry Potter audiotapes, on-line and off-line
dictionaries, an international baby names book, a book
of names from the 1930's, and pure guessing. I do not
insinuate that these are the ONLY ways to pronounce
the words used by JK Rowling. The words are to be used
as a guide.
There are many words that
are typically common on this site. All the words on
the site have been placed by request. Many readers are
from non-English speaking countries, and have asked
me to include 'common' English words and names that
are quite uncommon to their language.
Also, there is rumour that
Warner Bros. will be adding a pronunciation table to
their official website. Already, I've had questions
because some of their words are supposedly said differently
than my words. Since I am here to help readers of the
books, I am going to continue to go by the words on
Scholastic Inc.'s website (www.scholastic.com).
I have contacted Bloomsbury (the British publisher of
the Harry Potter books), and they said to go
with Scholastic's words as well.
Some of the words sound
different in the movies. I will take these into consideration,
since some may be more accurate than my words. However,
there are words that I will not change regardless of
how they are said in the movies. Moviemakers don't always
express the intent of the writer.
If you know that a word
is wrong, and you have a legitimate source, please e-mail
me and I will do my best to correct the word.
