Q:
Why is Hermione pronounced
'her
MY oh nee'?
A:
Hermione is a Greek name (meaning: eloquence). Other
similar Greek names include Chloe 'KLOH ee', Penelope
'pe nel OH pee', Zoe 'ZOH ee', and Persephone 'per SEF
oh nee'. JK Rowling chose this unusual name because,
1) she likes interesting words and names and, 2) so
there would be less chance that many girls out there
would have the name and be constantly compared to the
character.
Q:
Why is Voldemort pronounced 'VOL de more'?
A:
I (as many of you who
speak English) say Voldemort with the 't' sound when
I read the books. On Scholastic Inc.'s
website,
they have the pronunciation that I have provided on
my site. I trust that they are correct since they are
one of the publishing companies. JK
Rowling herself has also pronounced it this way in interviews.
That is why I chose to use it on my site. More
chances than not, Voldemort is supposed to be a French
name, therefore the 't' would be silent.
Q:
Why aren't there more pictures on this site?
A:
The answer to this question can cover a whole
range of questions about my site, but as this is the
most frequently asked question, I'll use this one. The
soul purpose of my site is to pronounce the words in
the Harry Potter books. That's it. If I start
getting into pictures, fan art, fan fics, etc., the
site will lose its focus. This is the only HP
site on the Internet that is completely a pronunciation
site. Many people have done fabulous jobs on mega HP
sites. If you are in need of pictures, et al., please
go directly to my links page
and check out the work others have put into their sites
for you.
Q:
Are you faking a British accent on your recordings?
A:
No. That really is just the way I talk. I chose
to use my own accent rather than try and fake a British
or American accent. Since my fractured accent is a good
mixture of both, I thought that it would work for this
site.
